What would happen if people had an optimistic point of view about their health and fitness?
People with more optimism seem to live better lives and have better health. In addition the recovery times after major surgeries are faster with less return hospitalizations. There was also another link made among higher blood pressure in middle-aged men with a pessimistic outlook.
There is another thought that maybe psychological factors are involved due to optimism that give a person a better chance at greater health. The thought was that people who are more optimistic form better social groups and lead better live therefore having less health problems. Scientist are suggesting that there are behavioral differences between people who are optimistic versus pessimistic that affect the psychological profile of the groups.
This article talks about two ways of measuring the optimism of a person. "Two systems are in widespread use; one measures dispositional optimism, the other explanatory style." Within these two styles of measurement are variations in which the measurements apply to different people. (Harvard Men's Health Watch; May 2008)
The positive expectation of a person is called the dispositional optimism on the other hand the negative or pessimistic side of a person is called the explanatory. The pessimistic side of men according to the articles seems to be directly linked to hypertension. Optimism helps people to live longer lives according to studies done in both the U.S. and the Netherlands. Positive attitude longer life on the other hand negative attitude could mean people will not life as long or as healthy.
In the next article the psychological factors of optimism was the main focus. This article claims that there is enough information to determine that dispositional optimism and pessimism is linked to both psychological and physical stressors. Optimist and pessimist cope with stressor in different manners. It seems that optimist try to change the outcome of a stressor while on the other hand pessimist accepts the stress and believes that it cannot be changed. The belief by the pessimist is that the problem is beyond their power to change.
The article dives deep in to the man versus women on the disposition of optimism and the difference between neuroticism and optimism. It also seems that there are differences in the way optimist and pessimist deal with depression post surgery. The facts showed that post surgery the pessimist (days, months, even years) later experience levels of depression that maybe above normal. This brings us to the appraisal coping and how it works with optimism. "Appraisal has been defined as the cognitive interpretation one has regarding a potential stressor" Coping is the manner in which a person is able to deal with the stressor in life.
